EXPERIENCE:

RICHIE’S PICKS, http://richiespicks.com  1999-present

Through my work as an online reviewer of children’s and young adult literature at Richie's Picks, I reach in excess of eight thousand librarians, teachers, students, parents, retailers, and publishing executives, with whom I share my in-depth essays on upcoming fiction and informational titles for children and adolescents.  As a result of my knowledge and reputation I have had the opportunity to gain appointment to and serve a three-year term (2002-2005) on the American Library Association’s 15-member Best Books for Young Adults committee, reading in excess of 250 books per year.  Presented at annual conventions of the California Library Association, the Assembly of Literature for Adolescents of the National Association of Teachers of English (ALAN), and the Nevada Reading Association.  Regularly booktalked  at schools throughout the San Francisco Bay area; to library employees through the Sonoma County Office of Education; and to graduate classes at Sonoma State University.

ONLINE LECTURER, San Jose State University, School of Library and Information Science, San Jose, California, 2008-present

I teach children’s services and materials classes, including classes that I have created for the program.  Classes taught include Children’s Materials, Ages 0-4; Children’s Services and Programming; and Picture Books for Older Readers.

LECTURER, Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, California, 2006-2007

Co-taught Education 524, Literature and Literacy with Dr. Jayne DeLawter after being a guest speaker in her classes for more than a decade.

GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT, San Jose State University, San Jose, California, 2006-2007

Employed in San Jose State University’s School of Library and Information Science, working with Dr. David V. Loertscher, former president of the American Association of School Librarians and trailblazer in the area of teacher librarian collaboration, I helped develop and deliver lectures, completed extensive tech work, and served as contributor to the text and editor of the online portion of the 2nd Edition of Young Adult Literature and Multimedia, Hi Willow Research and Publishing, 2006

BROOK HAVEN MIDDLE SCHOOL, Sebastopol, California, 2001-2007

As a volunteer, I co-developed Children’s and Young Adult literature-based curriculums for seventh and eighth grade English classes. I initiated the nation’s first No-Name Calling Week, inspired by James Howe’s 2001 novel, The Misfits, which was, in turn, utilized in the formulation of a National No-Name Calling Week, which is cosponsored by organizations including the Children’s Defense Fund, Amnesty International, the Association of Secondary School Administrators, and Girl Scouts of America.  No-Name Calling Week, 2007 included participation by more than 350,000 students nationwide.

I also created extensive online curricular and extracurricular resources for students, teachers, and parents. I employed my publisher connections to attract author visits to Brook Haven for which the publishers bore the full costs.  Resulting author appearances at the school included Jerry Spinelli, Karen Cushman, James Howe, Celia Rees, Brent Hartinger and Rick Riorden.

COPPERFIELD’S BOOKS, Sebastopol, California, 1995-2000

Children’s Buyer and Children’s Events Coordinator for six store chain.  Responsible for the Sonoma County appearances of dozens of children’s and young adult  authors and illustrators including J.K. Rowling, Philip Pullman, Christopher Paul Curtis, Sharon Creech, David Diaz, Sarah Stewart and David Small, Jean Craighead George, and Barbara Berger.  Engaged in staff training and regular booktalking presentations to employees.

WILLOW CREEK CHILDREN’S CENTER, Santa Rosa, California, 1989-1995

Executive Director and lead teacher of the nonprofit childcare center serving low income families in northwest Santa Rosa, California.  Under an annually-elected parent board, I had full charge of programming, budgeting, staffing, licensing, grant writing, and maintaining the educational and physical environment of the facility.  Hired at a time when the organization was insolvent, I rose to the challenge of maintaining the most affordable rates possible, hiring the best teachers, running an exemplary age-appropriate program. Throughout those years, I learned first-hand what books caught the attention and imagination of young children.
