PEOPLE DON’T BITE PEOPLE

Page history last edited by RichiesPicks 2 years, 2 months ago

13 July 2018 PEOPLE DON’T BITE PEOPLE by Lisa Wheeler and Molly Idle, ill., Atheneum, April 2018, 40p., ISBN: 978-1-4814-9082-6

“It’s good to bite a carrot.

It’s good to bite a steak.

It’s BAD to bite your sister!

She’s not a piece of cake.”

PEOPLE DON’T BITE PEOPLE is an infectiously rhythmic, irresistibly laugh-inducing picture book-slash-instruction manual, explaining in verse what one should and should not be munching on with one’s teeth. In addition to being hysterically funny, the glowing retro illustrations by Caldecott Honor illustrator Molly Idle make this gem as notable visually as it is textually.

PEOPLE DON’T BITE PEOPLE begins with endpapers exposing an enormous squared-off pair of closed chompers. Then we turn to see the title page text arching across a huge open mouth and tongue set between the now-open teeth. Idle’s Prismacolor pencil-rendered illustrations mimic colorful versions of the sort of filmstrip illustrations that I recall teachers presenting to us when I was a young sprout back in the day. They reinforce the text’s lessons about biting into appropriate foods, and NOT taking a chunk out of such things as your mom, your dad, your ponytail, or your friends.

The text contains both verses and choruses, making this a ready-made song that just needs the right three chords to be performed.

“People don’t bite people.

You’re not a zombie, dude!

A friend will never bite a friend.

BITING IS FOR FOOD!”

PEOPLE DON’T BITE PEOPLE is one tasty lesson that you don’t want to miss!
