WHAT’S SWEETER by June Tate, HarperCollins/Katherine Tegen, December 2022, 40p., ISBN: 978-0-06-311413-5
“But I tell you life is sweet,
In spite of the misery there’s so much more,
Be grateful.”
– Natalie Merchant (1998)
“Ever wonder how some people almost always seem happy, no matter what’s going on in their life? Even when life’s difficulties occur, they seem to have a grace and gratitude about life that many of us don’t understand. One of the reasons they can get through the tough times with such gratitude is because they’ve learned to enjoy the little things in life. And I believe that this is a key to happiness…Happiness comes from the simple things – and our ability to see them for their purity and enjoy them fully…Stop rushing through life and looking forward to the next thing. When you constantly look to the future you forget about today. And how to enjoy it. So, think upon the here and now as much as you can.”
– Heather Moulder, J.D., ACC, “How to Enjoy the Little Things”
“what’s sweeter
than the soft spot
behind a cat’s ear
or a dog
who just wants to be close
what’s sweeter
than a hammock
under a shady tree
or when a ladybug
lands on your arm”
What’s sweeter than going through a stack of newly-delivered books and finding one that hits you right there? A picture book so filled with little joys that you want to curl up with it and slowly savor each page as you re-read it. That’s what I found in June Tate’s WHAT’S SWEETER.
WHAT’S SWEETER could readily become a bedtime or circle time favorite. The author-illustrator employs mixed media and a childlike sensibility to depict such delights as a young person finally perfecting a skateboard trick. A pair of kids holding umbrellas in the rain, quietly trailing a mama duck and her row of ducklings. A child reading a letter from a friend.
WHAT’S SWEETER is a joyful read that may inspire children to occasionally escape their screens and their other plans, and pay attention to the little things that make life worth living.
