27 April 2020 MOOSES COME WALKING by Arlo Guthrie and Alice Brock, Chronicle, 2004, 32p., ISBN: 978-0-8118-1051-7
“Mooses come walking up over the hill
Mooses come walking, they rarely stand still.”
So begins a minute-long poem that Arlo Guthrie wrote in 1993 and began reciting at his performances. It was later published as a picture book. The comical blank-eyed mooses accompanying the story-poem are illustrated by Alice Brock of “Alice’s Restaurant” fame. Soon after this book was released in 2004, I had the very-funny poem memorized.
The thing about story poems like this is that you can just as easily read it aloud to a one- or two-year-old. They might not completely get it, but the rhythm of the poem will captivate them right along with the amusing moose mugs.
